You can post every day, hit every best practice, and watch nothing happen. No replies, no follows, no clients. The advice says keep going, consistency compounds. Sometimes that’s true. Often the real problem is that the posts are correct and completely forgettable.

Generic content doesn’t fail because it’s bad. It fails because it gives the reader no reason to do anything. Understanding why is the difference between posting into the void and posting things that land.

Agreement is not engagement

A safe post earns nods. The reader sees “consistency is key” or “you miss every shot you don’t take,” silently agrees, and scrolls on. Nothing happened. They didn’t learn anything they didn’t already believe, so there’s nothing to react to, share, or remember you for.

The posts that travel are the ones that make a reader feel something with an edge to it: finally someone said it, or wait, I disagree, or huh, I’d never thought of it that way. All three require a specific position. Agreement is frictionless, and frictionless content slides right out of memory.

Specificity is what reads as true

“Build an audience by providing value” is technically true and persuades no one, because it could have been written by anyone about anything.

“I deleted 4,000 followers I’d bought in year one and my engagement tripled in a month” lands, because it’s specific enough to be real. The number, the mistake, the result. Detail is the texture the brain uses to tell a genuine experience from a platitude. Vague claims feel like marketing. Concrete ones feel like a person reporting back from somewhere you haven’t been.

This is also why generic content can’t build trust at scale. Trust comes from a reader concluding this person actually knows, and that conclusion is built out of specifics they couldn’t have made up.

The thing that converts is a point of view

People don’t follow information. They can get information anywhere. They follow a point of view — a particular way of seeing the work that they want more of.

A point of view requires you to be willing to be wrong in public. To say the popular tool is overrated, the standard advice is backwards, the metric everyone chases doesn’t matter. That’s risky, and the risk is exactly the value. A take that couldn’t possibly be controversial also couldn’t possibly be interesting.

Generic posts avoid that risk by design. They’re built to be unobjectionable, which is the same as being unmemorable. You can’t be the safe option and the obvious choice at the same time.

Why this matters more as AI gets better

The supply of competent, agreeable, technically correct content is now effectively infinite. Anyone can generate ten polished posts before lunch. Which means competent and agreeable is worth less every month, because it’s no longer scarce.

What stays scarce is a specific person with specific experiences and a real opinion. That’s the one thing the infinite content machine can’t produce, because it requires having actually been somewhere and concluded something.

So the move isn’t to post more. It’s to post less averaged-out. One post that says a true, specific, slightly risky thing will do more than a week of posts that anyone could have written. The market is already drowning in the second kind. Be the first kind.
